Our Story
MAAK Leather Products Company began in 2012 as a small second-hand shoe business founded by Matsiko Isaac in Kampala's vibrant Owino Market. Through dedication and steady growth, the business expanded into regional branches in Rukungiri (2017) and Kabale (2018).
In 2018, the government hiked taxes on second hand shoes and encouraged Ugandans to start thinking of production since they had also started a leather Tannery in Kawumu. This was a defining moment — rather than stepping away from the footwear industry, Matsiko Isaac enrolled in an intensive six-month shoe-making training program at AFCAD to learn the art of leather craftsmanship from the ground up. Recognising our existing customer base — including schools, security and factory companies, fellow business owners, and everyday individuals — we shifted from reselling to local manufacturing.
Partnering with friends who willingly supported the production idea, we launched a joint shoe-making workshop with a team of 12 skilled workers. Despite the setbacks of the COVID-19 pandemic, MAAK Leather has emerged stronger, transforming a challenge into a story of resilience, craftsmanship, and locally made quality.
